In the summer the Chamonix valley can look at its most stunning. Les Houches becomes a beautiful vibrant landscape with colourful
mountains, and the valley becomes a paradise for alpine walking, mountaineering, cycling, white water rafting, and much more .
With warm weather and good snow conditions high on the mountains, Summer is peak tourist season. Cable cars and mountain huts are open from
mid June to mid September. Spring and Autumn tend to be quietest times of year and visiting in these low seasons has the advantage of a much more relaxed atmosphere. Very often you can still ski in the “Valle Blanche” throughout the year.

Activities available in Summer

  • Walking and Hiking:
    Beautiful alpine trails are available for all abilities, either starting on the valley floor or high in the mountains, taking advantage of the cable cars.

  • Mountain Climbing and Glacier Trekking:
    Make the most of being in the world capital of mountaineering and rock climbing!

    There are a number of climbing guides in the area, all of whom have to have passed the rigorous UIAA mountain guide qualification. In addition to several local guides who we can recommend on request, there are a few British Guides now based in the Chamonix valley who we have found to be very good:

    For indoor climbing the Mont-Blanc Escalade climbing arena offer introductory, intermediate and refinement courses.

  • Mountain biking:
    There are mountain bike trails through-out the valley, including trails from Les Houches to Chamonix. The mountain bike trail from the top of the Bellevue cable car is in an fantastic location at the foot of Mont Blanc. Nine different routes allow you to learn and develop your basic techniques.
    Why not catch a cable car up and bike down?

  • Paragliding:
    Try a tandom paraglide and if you like it, go on and do a beginners course.
    If you can already paraglide, Chamonix provides and excellent back-drop for you.

  • Water activities:
    Canoeing, kayaking, rafting, hydrospeed and canyoning activities are all offered in the Chamonix valley. Visit Adventures Payraud for more information.
    Les Houches also offers a small lake for fishing and relaxing.  You can take many scenic hikes from here, especially suitable for families.

  • Golf:
    The Chamonix golf course is open to the public - a beautiful high altitude course alongside the River L'Arve offering fabulous views of the Mont Blanc massif and the Aiguilles Rouges. It is an inexpensive golf club and information on playing a round of golf can be found at the Les Houches tourist office.
